November, 2009: Tami's Recipe

Thanks to all of you for your continued interest in my soap. It's quite a compliment and I appreciate it. Many of you have been customers and friends for years. I can't tell you how much I have appreciated you over that time. My leaving the soap business was both an overnight decision and a long-time debate. Sales were down, prices continued to increase. Unless I could buy in bulk which wasn't working since sales were down, it got harder and harder to afford to stay in business and maintain the quality of the soap.

In case you'd like to make your own, I'm going to post the recipe here with the request that if you end up making a batch, that you will please make a donation to your local animal shelter, the Farm Sanctuary, Mercy for Animals or Vegan Outreach.

The Farm Sanctuary is here: http://www.farmsanctuary.org
Mercy for Animals is here: http://www.mercyforanimals.org/
Vegan Outreach is here: http://www.veganoutreach.org/

This is the recipe that I use for all soap except the shaving soap, the shampoo bar, oh baby and the blue sky. I'll give the scent blends for the Blue Sky and Oh, Baby so you can use them with this recipe if you want. For basic directions in how to make soap, see this website:
http://www.millersoap.com/

To change the size of the batch, here's a lye calculator:
http://www.thesage.com

I've always said, it's not hard to make soap, but it's tough to make good soap. Hopefully this recipe will give you a head start. Please, please, be sure to read all directions carefully, measure exactly (you'll need an accurate scale), give yourself tons of time and keep any children far away while you're making it. Cure the soap for 6 to 8 weeks before using for harder bars. And make sure you put some love into it while you're making it.

Tami's Soap Recipe

Makes 12- 15 bars of soap in a loaf mold
1.5 ounces castor oil
17 ounces coconut oil
29 ounces olive oil
11 ounces palm kernel oil
1.5 ounces shea butter
8.65 ounces lye
20 ounces water

Basic oils can be purchased through Columbus Foods in Chicago, or Bramble Berry.

For essential oils: the Essential Oil University
http://essentialoils.org/shop/cat/1

For fragrance oils: Bramble Berry - http://www.brambleberry.com/ or Oregon Trails - http://oregontrailsoaps.com/

Now, for scents, I tend to use a lot but I think that's part of what made my soap business work for more than 10 years. You can cut back on the amounts if you like a lighter scented soap, but here are some of the formulas for the above amount of soap. I'm not bothering with the coloring, but that is wide open. Personally, I think the soap bar quality comes first, the scent second, and the visual last. If you have questions that aren't answered elsewhere, email me and I'll help if I can.

Blue Sky: 1.5 ounces peppermint essential oil, .75 ounce each spearmint and eucalyptus essential oils

By the Falls: 3 ounces bay rum fragrance oil

Country Oat: 3 ounces oatmeal, milk and honey (but yes, it's actually vegan)

Daybreak: 1 ounce rosemary essential oil, 2 ounces lime essential oil

Fresh Squeezed: 3.5 ounces yuzu fragrance oil

Green Tea and Honeysuckle: 1.5 ounces of each

Lavender Ripple: 3 ounces lavender essential oil (40/42 from France)

Oh, Baby: 1.5 ounces 5x orange essential oil, .75 ounces tangerine essential oil, 2 ounces lavender essential oil

Peppermint Teatree: 1.5 ounces of each essential oil

Most of the other scent blends are self-explanatory.

Thank you very much for your support over the years. Looking ahead, I've got a vegan cookbook coming out in February, 2010, from Vegan Heritage Press. If you're vegan or vegan-inclined, please check out my blog at www.veganappetite.com for some delicious and compassionate recipes.

Thanks again!

"No one makes such wonderful full bodied scents that last through the whole bar like Tami does! My personal fave is raspberry mango tango, besides in the shower I use bars as sachets in my closets and I always here "you smell soooo good"! "  -  S.V.

"I have loved working with Tami, she always has great deals going and her soaps are fantastic! The customer service is fantastic and I am always pleased once they are delivered. I love the natural soaps for my little girl that has eczema. I love the scented soaps for me and I also love how it leaves my skin feeling."  -   M.H.
